Working towards a more equitable society requires an understanding of the impact of gender on public policy and advocacy. By examining and applying theoretical frameworks to legal and policy analysis in both historical and contemporary contexts, students explore how gender influences and is influenced by policy and advocacy across a variety of sectors, such as law, health, politics, sport, and development. Throughout the unit students gain the analytical skills to critically assess existing policy, legislation, case law and academic writing. Students can engage with existing policies, identify and address gender bias, emphasise the importance of intersectionality, and propose evidence-based solutions to promote gender equality and equity.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe complex concepts and theories related to gender and public policy;
2. Analyse the impact of gender on public policy outcomes using appropriate analytical frameworks;
3. Evaluate existing public policies from a gender perspective and recommend improvements;
4. Design gender-sensitive policies and/or initiatives that address gender disparities and promotes inclusivity and equality; and
5. Communicate policy recommendations effectively to diverse stakeholders.
