Duality

In my artwork, birds are a significant symbol representing flight, freedom, migration, and my experiences of leaving home to navigate the world independently. They symbolise the process of moving away, evoking nostalgic memories of childhood while rediscovering and accepting a new self. Specifically, I use the shape of Tui which hold cultural significance in M膩ori culture as they have dual voice boxes and speak in two different realms. This represents the two versions of myself, one in my hometown of Aotearoa and one in Australia, yet I feel interconnected with both places simultaneously.
